The Basics of Mantel Decor

Creating the perfect mantel display can be easy and simple. Great mantel design is simply a focused use of the design basics of balance and proportion.

First you need to gather the items you would like to display on your mantel. The most popular display is a symmetrical design: center one item on or above the mantel; this will serve as your anchor,then ground it with a series of smaller, identical items on both sides. You could use vases, candlesticks, figurines and/or photo frames. This arrangement results in equal balance and mirror image on each half.

Another design is an asymmetrical display which has good balance, but on each side, the items will be different, yet equally weighted either physically or visually. For example; a grouping of lightweight items on one side can be balanced by a single, heavier item on the other side.
