Do you have a room that just doesn't feel quite right? It may just be "out of balance." There are 3 major types of balance that can be applied to any room.
* Symmetrical balance is created by making mirror images on either side of a center line. If decorating a mantel, identical candlesticks would be placed the same distance from the center creating a formal feeling. The same number of objects should be used on each side of the center line.
* Informal, or asymmetrical balance is created by evenly distributing visual weight without creating a mirror image. Three small objects on one side of a mantel can balance out a single large vase or floral arrangement on the other side.
* The third type of balance is radial. Objects are arranged around a center focal point. Often times this type of balance is found in dining rooms where the chairs radiate out from a round or oval table. It can also be achieved within a grouping on the wall by putting the focal point in the center and having smaller, yet similar objects radiating out like spokes.
Applying these principles of balance will help eliminate that 'not-quite-right' feeling.
