Have you ever stepped into someone's house and immediately felt at ease? Then chances are their home has been decorated in the "Cottage" style. This look is comfortable, relaxing and can be incorporated into many home styles. To get started, use white as a base color, then add two to three accents in soft shades of either blue, yellow, pink, green or aqua. For the furnishings, begin with the larger pieces such as the sofa and overstuffed chairs; using small prints, stripes, checks or plaid upholstery. This will set the tone for the rest of the room. Now start filling in with a few tables, lamps and accessories, such as candles, floral arrangements, framed photos or wood-framed clocks. Choose your accessories carefully, making sure to pick items that will bring in your own personal style. Be careful not to over-crowd though, as the items you chose should get a chance to shine on their own. The final step is window treatments. Keep the look clean and simple; whether you decide to use fabric, wooden blinds or even a set of old shutters. Have fun with this project. Cottage style decor does not have a lot of strict rules; just try to create your own version of a warm and welcoming home.
