Comfort Comes First in the Family Room

When you think about your family room or living room (wherever your television is),  COMFORT is the key because so much downtime is spent there and your sofa is the foundation for the room.  If you're starting fresh in your room, buy your sofa first; it will set the style and scale of all your other furnishings.  If your family room gets constant use, especially from the kids, choose the most durable and washable fabrics you can find.  Remember this is the perfect room for comfortable seating and displaying family momentos - family pictures or seashells from that glorious trip to the beach.

For function in your room you might add a chest of drawers or a low cabinet for toy and CD storage.  Ready-made bookshelves add storage and, with your treasures on display, they are interesting to look at.  Side tables are a necessity for lamps, remotes, and are an easy purchase as they can ride home in the car.  And speaking of lamps, table and floor lamps do a much better job than overhead lighting.  If the room is large enough, tuck a comfortable chair in a corner to create a reading nook.
