Here are a couple tips to seperate a single room into two without dividing walls; for example a kitchen with an adjoining family room.  Positioning the sofa with its back to the kitchen is one simple way to achieve this.  Then place a console or sofa table behind the sofa and it will decorate both areas at once.
 
 In a home with an open floor plan, areas can be defined with the use of area rugs.  Choosing area rugs with patterns and colors to coordinate with the furniture in each area, further sets the tone for each space.
