Scale matters

When arranging furniture and accessories in your home, group large pieces with other large pieces in a large room; likewise, in a small room, use smaller pieces grouped with other small pieces. As you choose pieces for a room, it is important that they correspond in scale with each other and with the room. This will create a feeling of unity and harmony. When the scale is appropriate, the eye should move smoothly from one object to another, taking in every important piece. Pieces that are too large will clash within the scale of the grouping and result in the viewer's attention being directed away from an intended focal point within the room. When you are decorating a room in your home, be sure to include "scale", as well as color and style, when making your decisions.
