Establishing a focal point can be just as important as picking out the right paint color for a room. A point of emphasis draws and attracts, it gives the eye a place to rest. Without it, the eye may wonder aimlessly from place to place, looking for a central point. If you are lucky enough to have a prominent fireplace or a nice view from a large picture window, you already have a built-in focal point. If not, emphsis can be placed on the sofa with a beautiful picture above it, a large curio with a cohesive collection placed inside or even painting a single wall in a darker or bolder color can add depth and dimension to a room. To be the most effective, a focal point should be seen by guests when first entering the room, not hidden behind a door or around the corner. It should be immediately obvious to anyone who comes into the room.
