Symmetry; n. beauty of form arising from harmonious proportions.
Symmetry is very important in any room. Without it there is little sense, and accessories (like pictures and the small accessories ) get lost. Balance plays a large part in symmetry and together both of these elements contribute to the overall comfort and feel of the room. An example of this would be arranging items on a fireplace mantel. Start with the larger, single objects in the center, then place pairs on each side. These pairs do not have to be identical, just related in some way; perhaps not the same size or color but of the same theme. Side items need to be smaller in scale than the center object so that they complement and complete the focal point. Simply changing a mantel can make the room take on a completely new look.
