One of the biggest trends I am seeing right now is the use of neutral colors. Neutral colors are not limited to only whites and beiges, but also include browns, grays, golds, and blacks. This color pallet has a calming and peaceful affect on most people. But, the lack or absence of actual "color," to some, can be considered cold and uninviting. The best way to add warmth to a neutral color scheme is to add texture. When decorating with texture, you can combine materials with different finishes. These include items that may be: silky, shiny, dull, smooth, rough, hard and/or shaggy. Using items with varied patterns or "feels" will add visual and tactile interest. For example, if you are starting with dark walnut hardwood floors and an ivory leather sofa, then you need to add some texture. Both of these surfaces are shiny and sleek; which means you should add some rough or shaggy textures. So, lets start by adding a sisal rug underfoot, a chair covered in a natural woven fabric and a few faux fur pillows for the sofa. Repeating textures in a room will unify the space and create a cohesive look. The saying, " opposites attract" is true for the neutral color scheme. Hanging a bright brass framed mirror on a stone wall or placing a collection of sea shells into a delicate glass vessel for the cocktail table, both follow this rule of thumb. When creating your own neutral space, you should use a combination of light and dark hues as well as a mix of texture. This will create balance and give a sense of continuity to your space.
