The style of furniture known as provincial is characterized as having simplified formal traditional lines. Wooden pieces such as armoires and hall chests will have beautiful carvings on the legs and facade. Chairs with wood accents tend to have curved arms, legs and backs; and many will have some type of carved detail. Provincial sofas and chairs for a formal living room are traditionally covered in silks, damasks and velvets. Cottons and textured fabrics are better suited for a more casual look in a family room. One of the most popular fabrics of the French influence is toile. These fabrics have an off-white or white background with a repeated pattern using only one other color, the most popular being blue. The French provincial style of furniture can be introduced into almost any decor. The pieces are timeless and versatile; and can be used in places such as a living room, dining room, entry way, or bedroom.
